Cauliflower, Cheddar

$3.00

Mature Plant Size: 18-24″x18-24″
Days to Harvest: 68-80 days

Cheddar Cauliflower produces striking bright orange curds packed with extra beta-carotene, holding its color through cooking and adding visual pop to any harvest. It performs much like white cauliflower but rewards the garden with color.

At Flying Rabbit Farm, our Cheddar Cauliflower transplants are grown for strong curd development and vivid orange color suited to Austin’s cool-season beds.

Care Instructions
Watering

Consistent, even moisture is essential; drought stress causes small, bitter curds
Water 2-3 times weekly

Fertilizing

Feed every 2-3 weeks with balanced organic fertilizer; more nitrogen-hungry than broccoli

Pruning & Maintenance

Unlike white cauliflower, orange types do not need blanching (tying leaves over the curd) — sunlight enhances the color
Harvest when curds are tight and full-sized

Common Issues

Cabbage worms and loopers (use row cover or Bt)
Aphids
Poorly-formed curds from heat stress during head initiation

Fall planting is the most reliable window; cauliflower is generally fussier about consistent cool weather than broccoli
No blanching needed for this orange type, unlike traditional white cauliflower

Seasonal Notes
Fall

Primary planting window; transplant in late summer for best curd development

Winter

Tolerates light frost; protect curds in hard freezes

Spring

Secondary planting window; race to harvest before heat arrives

Summer

Not recommended; heat causes poor curd formation

Late summer for fall harvest (August-September); late winter for spring harvest (January-February)
Ideal soil temperatures: 55-75 F

Sun Requirements
